Granate '08 from the Borja region is our finest new example of Spanish Garnacha. This absolute knockout appeared out of left field from a brand new importer, and we were very impressed with its depth of flavor and age-worthy tannins. Reminiscent of the great southern Rhones, it is the type of wine that will steal the thunder from areas like Rioja and Ribera del Duero. It can be enjoyed tonight with a lamb chop, or aged for at least 5 years for more flavor development. Forget about the familiar and see what direction Garnacha is headed in these days. –Michael Koehler
Tasting Note: "The 2008 Granate is old vine Garnacha but was aged for 10 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it delivers an alluring nose of smoke, Asian spices, lavender, and black cherry. This leads to a round, opulent, concentrated Garnacha that is all about pleasure. Drink this outstanding value over the next 6 years." 90 Points WA
